What are the key differences between Power BI Desktop and Power BI Service?

  • How they differ in purpose (e.g., one for report creation and the other for sharing/viewing).
  • What functions each supports (e.g., offline vs. online use).
  • What features are unique to each, such as data handling, collaboration, and refresh capabilities.
  • The main use cases for each tool and how they fit into a typical Power BI workflow.
 
1. Desktop is primarily for development and designing dashboard and model. Service is where semantic model and dashboard is published to. Where it can be shared with others and collaborate on reports.

2. Desktop is off line only. Service is online.

3. That depends on license. See point 1.
