VLookUp

I am doing a VLookUp between two workbooks. I select the look up value, then I move to the second workbook to select my range, the range can't be displayed in the formula bar, as if the function breaks, unless I copy and paste the sheet and put it in the same workbook where my lookup value is. What is solution?

Thank you for your comment.

This is happening for the same reason as your other problem:

http://chandoo.org/forums/topic/move-a-sheet-into-another-workbook

You need the two workbooks open in the same instance of Excel so that they can 'talk' to each other.

Hi GGGGG,

shift the data from both sheets to separate new excel sheets and apply vlookup formula,

thnks,

Hi 5G,

Its normal.. If you have more than one instance of Same Application (in you case EXCEL) you will not able to select the data from any Sheet/Workbook of another Excel Instance..

For exp...

Open EXCEL from AllProgram and drag a Excel File there. File 1

Now again drag another file in the same instance.. File 2

Go to AllProgram again open Excel.. (If start up flash screen appear again.. ) then its opening second instance of Excel.. Drag any other file there.. File 3..

Now you will not able to select / link Formula when you are in FORMULA mode, and even you will not able to close all Opened sheet using Ctrl + F4..

To solve.. try open all the file in same Window / by dragging in the same Sheet..

Hope someone will elaborate my words.. what I want to say.. :)

Regards,

Deb

Thank you for the help. I think it is clear now. I need to open from one location.

Hello team,

Why do you mean same instance of excel? I tried it and it didn't work. I had to open one excel workbook from my document and one from start menu. Please give me to understand what is the same instance of excel?

Thank you for the help.

Dear 5G,

Please test the two situations.

Situation-1

Think you have 2 excel files in D drive, Book1 and Book2.

1. Open Book1>Go to D3 of Sheet1>Type = (Equal Sign)

2. Open My computer>Book2>Select a cell or

2. Press Ctrl+N for opening a new Excel file>Select a cell

Result: It is working. Data brought from Book2 to Book1 because these two files are open in same instance.

Situation-2

1. Open Book1>Go to D3 of Sheet1>Type = (Equal Sign)

2. Open an Excel file from START menu>Select a cell

Result: It is not working. Formula is not active here because these two files are not running in same instance.

Hi,

I need your opinion on if similar Vlookup funciton can work for the problem listed here.

I would like to create several automated excel reports based on the master data sheet-sheet1 . The master data sheet has three/four variable that gets populated in the reports(sheet2); one for each employee in sheet1 (one for each row in sheet1)

I am totally new to Excel and this forum. Please help.

I am attaching the link to the sample sheets. The field highlighted in the sheet1 needs to appear in sheet2. sheet2 is needed for all the data rows in sheet1.

Hope the link is acceseable.

Thanks.
