Using + and - when not in a formula

I am a land surveyor. I often manipulate data from a CSV file in excel. When I open a file the columns show
point no. - northing - easting - elevation - description

in the description we use codes specific to our drafting software. The codes often have a + or a - at the beginning of the description. ex. +smrw 3.5w. when i import the csv all descriptions that are like this are recognized as a formula and excel puts a = at the beginning of the text. This creates a #NAME? error. My quick fix is to simply replace all = with nothing and I am back to where I want to be. But my question: is there a way to turn off that recognition in excel so it wont put the = sign in the text in the first place.

thanks

J
