THREE PIE CHARTS COMPARISON

blazy

Member
Hello,

I created one dashboard and Im in final stage. I was wondering if there is any other way of presenting the data than in three different pie charts (my boss wants pie chart).

So basically I have three different pie charts that all show the same thing, but they differenciate of one another. One pie chart shows sales for person 1, second it shows average sales for all of "persons" and the third pie chart it shows sales of the top5 person regarding one another criteria.

Do you have any suggestion of how to make this better?

Thanks.

No offense to you, as I know how bosses can be, but it's an impossible task. Pie charts = No comparison, bad data representation. Asking someone to make a good comparison with different Pie charts then becomes an oxymoron. :(
If it was the same data in each, maybe...but there's more than 3 slices, and they're EXPLODED! Notice that you had to give data labels showing the percentage on each slice, thus providing the same info as a data table, except that they're attached to a pretty pie slice. :p [/rant]

Ok, what to do...?
The first chart would seem to be a stand-alone. It's a subset of the 2nd, maybe the 3rd.
If possible, I'd make this into either a column or bar chart, with the data sorted in descending order. Values on the axis would either be the absolute value, or the percentage of whole, depending on which you're actually trying to convey.

For the 2nd chart, again, bar/column chart sorted in descending order. This might also eliminate need for 2rd chart...not sure what you meant by "other criteria". Here's the same set of data, presented in bar vs. pie

If it wasn't for the data labels, I don't think you'd be able to tell that Person 1 > Person 9 looking at the Pie chart.

Hi ,

Given that you have to use pie charts , there are things you can do to improve the visualization.

1. You have 3 pie charts showing :

  • Sales for person 1
  • Average sales for all salespersons
  • Sales of the top5 person ; I do not know what this means , but can I assume that this chart shows the performance of the best salesperson ?
Looking at the data , I do not know whether the pie-charts are in the above order ; can you say which chart is for which of the above ?

2. Looking at the 001 , 002 ,... in the charts are these products , or some other categorization of a salesperson's performance ?

3. A pie-chart has provision for an exploded pie to draw attention to a particular item of data ; having a pie-chart with all pieces exploded is just distracting.

4. Try to introduce other elements such as CF and interactivity to increase the amount of information that is conveyed.

Hello to both of you!

Of course, if we find a better solution I can talk to my boss to change presentation from pie chart to one another chart.

Graphs in my picutre are in that order:

1.) Is the sales for selected "person" for selected month. Numbers from 001-009 are index numbers (groups). So every item sold belongs into one index number, and I want to present which index numbers have the biggest share and which needs improving.

2.) Second chart is the same data but for the whole network (all of the persons). So average sales for all the persons on YTD basic (again sales are devided in 9 index groups).

3.) 3rd chart will be probably removed, but it is still the same data but just for sales for top5 persons, who are the best in one another criteria.

@NARAYANK991 , what did you mean at point 4?

@Luke M, OK how can I add comparison into bar chart? So probably the best solution it would be that if user choose one person for certain month, that they see the sales for that person(by index numbers) first and then to see their TO comparing to the YTD average (by index numbers 001-009) of all the network. Lets leave the third chart, because it will be probably removed.

Thanks!

Hi blazy,
Not sure if I got the math right same as how you're calculating, but here's a mock-up combining the 3 types of data. Produces this chart

Went with keeping the Items in order, as that might be important to boss. One chart now lets you compare individual to group to Top 5.
