The connections between Milestone, Activities, Deliverables, Project Phase

I have a project management related question. How are milestones, deliverables, activities, project phase all related? I can see that some of these are subsets of others, but I'm trying to see the big picture.

Is this how these are hierarchically related:

  • Project Phase (Planning, Design, Development, etc.)
    • Milestones
      • Activities
        • Deliverables
or

  • Project Phase (Planning, Design, Development, etc.)
  • Milestones
    • Deliverables
      • Activities
or

  • Project Phase (Planning, Design, Development, etc.)
  • Milestones
    • Deliverables & Activities
or are these all related in some other way?

Hi ,

I think they are related but not in a hierarchical fashion.

Activities are a subset of the Project , but I would imagine that Planning , Design and Development are also Activities , in a sense.

Deliverables are the expected outcomes of a Project ; when we say a Project is completed , what can we say has been delivered to the client / customer ?

Milestones are Signposts along the route to Project completion , which help us to monitor our progress , so that we can measure how far we have come / how near we are to completion. These can be either the number of tasks / activities , or a demarcation of the important phases of a Project such as Design , Development , Testing and Implementation in a software project. A finance team might have milestones of the expenditure , such as how much of the allocation has been spent.
