Template saves as template

Hello all,

I have a problem with the use of templates (xltx).
I made one and when I open it it will transform it to a workbook and adds a 1 at the end of the name. So far so good.

However, for my collegues it still opens as a template with the same name, hence it will overwrite the file if they are careless. Do you guys know what goes wrong here? I thought it would make it stupid simple, but now everyone saves the files as a template...

Were using excel 2010 on a hosted server.

Pls help
Thanks in advance

Michael

A template is just that a template to be used over and over again, what you don't do is use it and then save it as a template. Use it and then save it with a new name as a normal XL file, this will leave the template as is ready for use the next time needed.

Thanks for the reply,

I think you misunderstood the problem though. The problem is that it is supposed to automatically change it to a workbook when opened. Apparantly it doesn't do that always and with some people it saves as a template as default.

I think it might be a setting or something...

Hi Michael ,

An Excel template is used when creating new workbooks ; in Options , under the Save section , there is a dropdown which is labelled :

Save files in this format

In my case , this is selected to :

Excel workbook ( *.xlsx )

Thus , when I use an existing template and create a new workbook , at the time of saving , whether I click on Save or on Save As , the same dialog opens , and the default option is for the new workbook to be automatically saved as an Excel workbook.

The template itself is never modified. Probably the above option selection may not be the same in your version of Excel and theirs.
