Strange error message...

I just received an error I haven't seen in Excel before. I have a table of information that feeds a PivotTable. I wanted to add another field to the PivotTable so I went to the source to insert a column. When I inserted the column in the middle of the table and tried to input data into the new column, I got a dialog box that stated: This cell is formula driven, please do not edit/delete the cell contents.

I checked for conditional formatting, macros, and cell protection and can't fix this.

Good day

May be on the wrong track,......but if you have a pivot table that pulls data from a source that you picked when making the pivot, that source is locked, you can see this by the marching ants when you click in to a cell in your source sheet. If you try to insert a column then you will be pushing data out of your selection area! How long would it take to copy paste source to a new sheet, add your extra column and make a new pivot table. If I am wrong I too would like to be shown the error of my reasoning.......

Hi Guys:

@Bob--I see what you're saying, and I was trying to get around pushing data out of the selection by inserting the column in the middle, it usually expands the source selection for me. I ended up adding the column to the right of the table I had and updated the source of the existing PivotTable to include the new field

@Faseeh--How does one upload a file? I have to delete some sensitive info first--but I'd like to explore this because I've never seen anything like it.

Hi!

I'd recommend you to read the three first green sticky topics at this forums main page. There you'll find general guidelines about how this site and community operates (introducing yourself, posting files, netiquette rules, and so on).

Among them you're prompted to perform searches within this site before posting, because maybe your question had been answered yet.

Feel free to play with different keywords so as to be led thru a wide variety of articles and posts, and if you don't find anything that solves your problem or guides you towards a solution, well, come back here, tell us what you've done, consider uploading a sample file as recommended, and somebody surely will read your post and help you.

Regards!

Hi!

Hats off again, old dog fully new-tricked.

Hi fguard,

You can go to any free file hosting website like rapidshare.com, 4shared.com etc and upload a file. Please set its right to public so that any one can access it.

In order to replace sensitive information you can use rand() and randbetween() function that will fill you sheet with fictitious data so no need to worry about that. Just make a copy of file, fill it with random data and upload and paste its accessible link here.

Faseeh

If you click on your pivot table the pivot table tools tab opens, choose options and in the data part of the ribbon you can select Change data source and then follow as required…… when you return to your pivot table, it should display information from the new data source.

This is for Excel 2010

SirRB7......there is an old saying that you can not teach an old dog new tricks....do my best to prove it wrong...long way to go :)
