Hi all,

Somebody from another team unprotected my macro's recently.

First i thought myself might have been forgot to protect it or somebody knows my password, then i again protected it with new password. After few days, it is seems to be unprotected again. Then i search in google for the same lot of options (like HEX editor etc) are available in market to break the macro passwords.

How can i protect my macros from these crackers?

Regards

Sreekhosh.

Hi Sreekhosh,

I dont think you can protect the macros permanently as there are lot of softwares available in the market to crack the passwords.

Hi !   Maybe you could (should) use in your password specials characters

like #160 and / or #255 as false spaces …

In the end, there's no way to stop someone who has enough motive & time from getting past your password. Security in Excel is just not that strong. Check out this discussion for some various methods to make it "hard" at least.

@Marc L

The use of special characters won't have any affect, since the Hex Editor method removes the correct password from the VB program and tells XL that the user needs to re-enter a new one. User then supplies a password of their own choice (say, "1234") and then when XL asks for the password to see macro, you just plug in the simple password.

Hi, sreekhosh!

Sorry to say but there's no secure password or protection method within Excel. I'm tempted to say that today Excel passwords should have a OG-13 qualification, that's to say...

Owner: if your user has more that 13 years old, your password is yet ineffective.

Regards!

PS: notation regarding PG-13 from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_Picture_Association_of_America_film_rating_system

PS2: May be K-9 too

PS3: Don't consider any of both previous, kids and dogs are more intelligent each day

PS4: Joke... Joke?... hmmm... I wouldn't bet on Excel password systems. So nothing like a joke. Even if Excel passwords are a joke.

"kids and dogs are more intelligent each day"

that is absolutely right SirJB7!!!!thanks for the (wiki) information also.

Thanks for the update LukeM and MarcL
