Shortcut for Fixing cells or Ranges with the $ symbol?

Austinma

Member
Hi

I can easily define the following formula by typing the text and dragging the cursor over the range of cells that I want to select:

=SUM(A1:A20)

If I wanted to fix the range to give the following formula:

=SUM($A$1:$A$20)

Then I would have do to manually type the '$' signs on either side of the 'A'.

My question is whether I can hold down a key(s) whilst dragging my cursor over the range such that excel automatically inserts the '$' characters?

Many thanks,

Austinma

Hit the F4 key after you make the selection or type it out. Hitting it again will cycle through the options.

Hi, Austinma!

I'd recommend you to read the three first green sticky topics at this forums main page. There you'll find general guidelines about how this site and community operates (introducing yourself, posting files, netiquette rules, and so on).

Among them you're prompted to perform searches within this site before posting, because maybe your question had been answered yet.

Feel free to play with different keywords so as to be led thru a wide variety of articles and posts, and if you don't find anything that solves your problem or guides you towards a solution, well, come back here, tell us what you've done, consider uploading a sample file as recommended, and somebody surely will read your post and help you.

And about your question... Press F4 after selecting range. Press F4 again and look what happens, then cycle again until desired reference type appears.

Regards!

Hi SirJB7,

Apologies for replicating posts - will take time to familiarise myself with forum etiquette.

Question asked and answered in the space of a couple of minutes.

Superb.

Thanks to all,

Hi, Austinma!

Nothing to apologize for, you didn't know, and I was simply trying to guide you thru the best path.

Glad you solved it. Thanks for your feedback and welcome back whenever needed or wanted.

Regards!

You can also use F4 to repeat the last thing you did.

For instance if you change the border of a cell and you want to do it to another cell. just press F4.

or

If you just pasted something and you want to paste it somewhere else again. just press F4

You can do it for almost everything!!

@Montrey!

Hi!

For taking the dog out for a walk too? It's getting cold outside...

Regards!

PS: I see myself pressing F4 hundreds of times (with the keyboard in front of the dog) but he doesn't move... Yes, I checked, still alive and breathing.

Hi, Austinma!

From Excel, press Help or F1, then write in the search text-box "keyboard shortcuts", then Shortcuts (or something like "Métodos abreviados de teclado de Excel 20XX" in spanish), and you'll find four links to:

- ribbon access

- Ctrl combinations

- function keys

- other shortcuts

Good luck, you have for a two weeks reading at least.

Regards!
