Retain formatting when linking cells (subscript)

In the attached file, I have cell E5 linked to cell C5. Cell C5 contains 'x' as a subscript.

However, when the value of C5 appears in E5, the 'x' is not retained a subscript.

How can I retain the same formatting when I am using linked cells?

Hi ,

Formulas cannot do anything to a cell format.

Only values can be transferred from one cell to another ; if you want a cell to have a particular format , you will have to find some other means to do it , either manually or using Conditional Formatting or using VBA. But even CF cannot change the font or the subscript / superscript attributes.

There are some Unicode subscript characters you could use rather than formatting an ordinary character as subscript. The set of characters supported in Excel is limited but Unicode 1D6A is a Greek lower case subscript chi, which might serve your purpose.

Subscript numbers can be used and the combination of character and subscript can be used as a defined name even though it would conflict with cell addresses were the number not subscripted.
