Report Design (books?)

Hi All,

This forum has given me some great inspiration and references when it comes to designing dashboards. The book recomendations posted a couple days ago were superb! I grabbed the one about dashboard design right away.

But does anyone know any books/sites about designing reports? Those are similarily important to me as dashboards are but I am not able to find good guidlines how to create them as good as creating dashboards...

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the fast reply AIM. I already have that book on my shelf (as mentioned above). This is a great resource indeed - but for dashboards. Those are different from reports in my opinion.

For reporting & Dashboard..

Excel Dashboards and Reports - Walkenbach & Alexander (from Baconbits)
&
Excel Dashboard Reports - Charles W. Kyd (ExcelUser.com)

are very usefull..

It seems some people are thinking Dashboards and reports are similar or even the same.
Maybe you should define them...like for me dashboards are interactive, dynamic forms that are live on a computer. Reports are static snapshots that can be printed but have to be updated each time you want to look at a different measurement.

Also, I think tips for dashboards apply to reports anyway. A report is basically (as I see it) a dashboard at one point in time. They can still have all the good looking graphics presented in the same way. You just wont be using drop down filters, scroll bars or active-x controls.

Hi ,

My take is that dashboards give you information in a nutshell , since the amount of screenspace is limited ; reports can extend to several pages , and therefore reports need to go beyond dashboards in analyzing the information ; reports need to not just present what happened , but need to explain why it happened , why were sales low , why were the sales low in a particular region / product , why were the recalls more , were they because of specific components from specific vendors , or related to machine problems on the shopfloor ,....

Dashboards need to highlight critical information so that managers can ask the right questions ; reports need to answer these questions.

Good presentation is always essential and appreciated.
