Relative cell referencing not working with simple formulas

When doing simple formulas like A1/A10 (A10=total) and copying and pasting the formula down, the #DIV/0! appears. According to the error check, it grabs the next empty cell down e.g. A2/A11 and not A2/A10. Absolute reference fix this, but I am not too familiar with this and use large spreadsheets with many columns and would rather use the relative cell reference. Why is excel 'forcing' me to use the absolute reference; is it something that I pressed wrong somewhere, etc. How can I go back to copying and pasting the simple formula A1/A10 so that it results in A2/A10 and not A2/A11, and so forth!

If you use a relative reference it will always adjust (that is the definition of what a relative reference is) so you have to use an absolute reference. I don't really understand why it is a problem?
