Re excel alternative to money matters

Hi my wife has been using microsoft money matters for managing a ' Christmas club' for many years. The disk she has was free with a magazine when windows 95 was in common use.

I have managed to ' just' get it working in vista.....but one day it may not be possible with future operating systems.

I wondered if anyone had written such a program with excel, allowing for multiple accounts and accounts within accounts, such as with money matters.

Thanks

Hi, reddwarf4ever!

My wife has been using my money... I don't know how and what for, but if it was for a Xmax Club surely I'm not Santa. :(

And about your question, please describe the desired workbook structure, its worksheets, the columns, what information is to be entered and what is the required output. If you can upload scanned images of the printings of the old system it'd help, anyhow consider uploading any sample file (old, working or not).

Regards!

Microsoft Money Matters is still a free download, but as you may know, is no longer supported. While you could build something similar, perhaps, in XL, I would warn up front that it would not be anywhere as secure as MM was designed to be.

Other options? I personally prefer using mint.com to track my accounts. It is completely free, and fairly easy to setup. It can automatically categorize your expenditures.
I've also heard good things on ynab.com (you need a budget). Small fee associated with this one, but also easy to use.

If still looking for a local program, not online, Quicken would be my recommendation. But again, this is not a free option. :(

Hi,

Here's a couple of free downloads, I haven't used them myself but I'm still using Microsoft Money 2001 which I've been using for years, so sometime in the near future I'll need to find something more up to date myself ;)

Let us know which one you go for in the end, either one from your replies or one you find yourself, we'd be interested to know :)

Hi
thanks for the ideas.....but GSP money maters is almost exactly perfect for my wifes needs.
It allows for multiple accounts, where each account can have multiple sub accounts, havnt found any program which matches these needs. Security is not an issue, as it runs on one pc only without access to the internet.

I now plan to write my own program and when finished, I hope there is a way I can share it with other users of this forum

I have a couple of initial questions....firstly I need to have approx 6 main accounts, each with up to 20 sub accounts....I propose making each account t page an excel sheet...e.g. Sheet 1 could be ' Fred' with 20 tabs e.g. Tax, car, shopping etc etc not sure if there is a better way, than having 20*6 sheets....of course I believe they can be hidden....

Secondly the program must have direct debit, standing order facilities......I am unsure how to make a calculation occur if a specific day of the month has been reached, without it posted the DD or SO every thine the program is run....My first thoughts are to set a flag to show the program the SO or DD has been posted( calculated) but not sure how or if this is the best way......

Thanks
