Query regarding Scatter Charts

New Member
Hello,

I'm trying to figure out how Scatter Charts work. I've got some data in an Excel sheet. I am selecting different parts of it to see the resultant scatter charts. Sometimes selecting different data shows me the same chart. Sometimes I see charts which I cannot understand. Have been reading a lot about scatter charts but still not able to figure out WHAT EXACTLY they are based on.

I have attached a Word document with pictures showing the different charts created & the data selected for them. Also attaching the Excel sheet for your reference.

Please explain what a scatter chart is based on and why I am getting a different number of graph lines and lines of different shapes in different scenarios.

Thank you.

Hi Renuka ,

For anything and everything in Excel charts , the go to site is Jon Peltier's , here :

For your specific question in X-Y charts , see this link :

http://peltiertech.com/Excel/ChartsHowTo/VBAExcelXYCharts.html

My suggestion would be not to create a chart by merely selecting the data range , since then you are leaving it to Excel to interpret the data in its own default manner ; as far as possible , create the chart step-by-step yourself.

With reference to your data , you need to decide what you wish your chart to show :

1. The variation in any one measure ( Predicted , Actual , Average ) from one day to the next

2. The variation between the measures on a particular day

For both these situations , the X-Y graph is not a suitable selection ; a better choice would be a column chart or a combination column+line chart.
