PowerPivot Pivot Tables and Formatting Lost for no apparent reason

Hi everyone. I have a very large file that is running a model based on PowerPivot data obtained from an SQL Database. After working in the file and saving it throughout the day, I opened it back up to find that all PowerPivot tables were gone, the PivotTables were all pasted as values, and the formatting was all removed. I received a message that said an exception had occured in Excel.exe because of a new instance of Visual Studio 2008. There was also a note about the file being recovered in the file name.

Ideally we would like to recover all of the Pivot Tables and calculations. We can reload the SQL feeds relatively easily.

Any ideas?

Yikes! Assuming you have not yet saved the "recovered" file over the old one, have you been able to open the file on a different machine? Hopefully it's just a local issue and not a true file corruption. A long shot might also be to start XL in safe mode and then try to open the file.

To open in Safe Mode:

Click Start, and then click Run.

Input the following

Excel.exe /s

Hit Ok

We are afraid that it autosaved. Opening on a different machine had the same result.

We just tried the safe mode and no luck.

Everytime we try to open the file we get a note that says Microsoft Excel has stopped working.

Hi, OleMiss2010!

Might this be useful?

PS: BTW, I don't trust on MS recovery of anything.

Hi, OleMiss2010!

If it's a 2007+ version file, try this:

- create a copy of the file

- rename it as .cab

- open with any unzipper (WinRar, WinZip)

- then you'll find this folders and file inside:

a) _rels

b) docProps

c) xl

d) [Content_Types].xml

Play around for a while and see if it helps.

Regards!
