First of all.. GREAT! Now, that's over.. I am feeling pretty stupid. I felt I was just ready for anything PP, sir, not the case! Now, here is the story:

1. Downloaded data from our master accounting program into excel format, several tables in fact

2. One was sales for a given period

3. One was customer address information with invoice numbers and transaction amounts

4. I got throught the linked tables okay then came the relationships. Both tables had a common field: the Customer ID. When I attempted to join them Excel and PP got very cranky and said no I could not because of what was duplicates.

What am I doing that is not correct?

PS.. downloaded the Contoso V2 data and went over that.. no issues but still scratching my bald head.

PowerPivot relationships must be one to one or one to many only. It does not support many to many replationships.

In your case, customer ID must have been repeated in both sales & invoice tables.

Here is what I suggest:

Link sales to customers table (unique list of customer details including their IDs)

Link invoices to customers table

Now, you would be able to extract summaries as per your need

Regarding the same above Isuue,

I sorted my data and only put the unique values in one sheet.

But when updated the data and tried to relate it is showing the same error.

May be because it has empty rows in the table.

How to delete them from the power pivot table.

You can not edit or delete anything from Power Pivot tables. You can restart by deleting the table in pp and recreating it from scratch.
