I have few important excel files which I do not want to be accessed by others on LAN. Can I protect these files by using some formula which can not be seen.is there any scope to apply such formula in another file to protect the desired one (e.g. applying formula in X file to protect Y file.

Someone else will have to weigh in on your question specifically, but you can password protect individual cells, whole sheets or the entire file--you do this from within the file, but I'm sure someone knows how to do this externally.

No, you can not set security settings on an external file. You're best bet would be to open the files you want secure, go to Save As, and under Tools/Options, security, setup a password to open the file.
