Multiple Rows of Tabs

lagrandb

New Member
I've searched online and haven't been able to find a solution to this simple issue. Perhaps the answer is "you can't" but was hoping someone here would know the answer. Is there any way to have Excel display multiple rows of tabs? I have some models with many tabs and it's always annoying to have to scroll over (or CTRL/pg up or down) to get where I need to go.

If you can't, Microsoft should think about that as an option in the next version of Excel.

Thanks.

Hi, lagrandb!

First of all welcome to Chandoo's website Excel forums. Thank you for your joining us and glad to have you here.

As a starting point I'd recommend you to read the three first green sticky topics at this forums main page. There you'll find general guidelines about how this site and community operates (introducing yourself, posting files, netiquette rules, and so on).

Among them you're prompted to perform searches within this site before posting, because maybe your question had been answered yet.

Feel free to play with different keywords so as to be led thru a wide variety of articles and posts, and if you don't find anything that solves your problem or guides you towards a solution, you'll always be welcome back here. Tell us what you've done, consider uploading a sample file as recommended, and somebody surely will read your post and help you.

And about your question...

If you haven't performed yet the search herein, try going to the topmost right zone of this page (Custom Search), type the keywords used in Tags field when creating the topic or other proper words and press Search button. You'd retrieve many links from this website, maybe you find useful information and even the solution. If not please advise so as people who read it could get back to you as soon as possible.

I'm sorry to say that "you can't" as you supposed.

What you can do is something like this, if your model lets you:

a) keep visible a group of worksheets that you can easily handle within the tab area

b) create a new worksheet with a command button for each -at least hidden- tab, which in the code it should start making worksheet visible and activating it

c) place a couple of optional buttons in this sheet to hide/unhide all, selected or invert selection, or any combination you wish, taking care of always keeping this sheet visible

d) add a button on each -at least hidden- worksheet to return to all-buttons worksheet

e) enter Microsoft site, search for comments on Office, and ask them to implement this features in Excel's next version... it'd be more helpful that expecting some guy at MS read your post and take action

Regards!

lagrandb,

Are you looking for some nifty ways to navigate a workbook that has many worksheets?

If yes, here is one trick:

:Open the file and enable the macro

:From keyboard, press ctrl+shift+w to get the tabs list vertically. Click on the tab you want to navigate to.If you have more than 15 tabs in your workbook, the last entry in the list will be More Sheets.Click on More Sheets to get a full listing of all the tabs in your workbook.

Description of the work done:

1)The attached workbook contains 11 sheets.

2)I have written this one line of code in a standard module

Application.CommandBars("workbook tabs").ShowPopup

3)Hit alt+F8 to bring macro dialogue box. It will automatically select the subroutine (ShowTabs) I have place in the module

4)Hit on option to get Macro option dialogue box

5)Assign the shortcut key as 'W' (Hence, to run the macro, the short cut key becomes: ctrl+shift+w)

[Note: you can assign any other letter of your choice]

Here is the example workbook:

Good day Vlagrandb

If you have a lot of tabs scrolling can be a bit of a pain. Right click on the black arrows to the left of the scroll area and a list will show of the tabs, this will mean you have to click with the mouse three times but it is quicker that scrolling

Hi, old dog!

Good morning.

Thanks for the tip, I just learned it now, I neither noticed this.

Regards!

PS: If you happen to get/buy/borrow the book Excel Hacks 2nd Edition by David and Raina Hawley, in Chapter 1, Hack #7, Create an Index of Sheets in Your Workbook there's described a nice and simple technique for the usual approach.

Good evening all

Glad you found the tip helpful, not every thing need a piece of vba code :)

Good evening lagrandb

If your work sheet is so large that you have to do a lot of scrolling to get where you were last then put an indicator in you spread sheet, most have a row header and column names which leaves A1 empty. If you put =cell(address) in to A1 it will tell you the last cell that had data entry, Right click,copy...right click name window, next to formula bar, to the left of,and paste(Ctrl+v), hit enter and it will take to that call, takes a lot longer to read than do.

@ bobhc..

I absolutely agree with you "not every thing need a piece of vba code".

That is the beauty of excel being so flexible that a single task can be solved in multiple ways and if that can be achieved without scripting, we should definitely go for that. But it is just what comes in our mind at the first place from our knowledge dictionary....:)

Thank you again for sharing the tip...you are really awesome...

Hope you are enjoying a wonderful weekend..

Kaushik

Good day Debraj Roy and kaushik03

VBA is a powerful tool when used correctly and can save a whole lot of time and repetition, it can do things that on their own formulas and functions would struggle to do. It is just that having read the many posts on Chandoo I get the impression that people ,for some reason, want to use VBA for every thing, I am also a great believer in to old maxim "if it ain't broke don't fix it" ie use whats there. I have used VBA a lot in Access and I know it is a bit different from Excel VBA but Access VBA has made me wary of code as it is complete a utter crap with a mind of it's own. :)

Good evening all

The scrolling bar/buttons in Excel 2013 give even better choice and ease of use

@all

Who dared to state that "not every thing need a piece of vba code"? Heretics, apostates, terrorists...

Good morning SirJB7....I go with apostates and at a push terrorist (most at work think that any way)...............but Heretic, now I think thats a bit far......viva the function...long live the formula
