What would it look like to begin modeling a star schema for business user feed back using Excel? I'm reading Kimball's Dimensional Modelling Toolkit ed 3 where it says "
Leverage a Modeling Tool
Before jumping into the modeling activities, it’s helpful to have a few tools in place.
Using a spreadsheet as the initial documentation tool is effective because it enables
you to quickly and easily make changes as you iterate through the modeling process."
The way I interpret that is to install Power View Add In and design the fact and dimension table within the data model, adding relationships star schema fashion, and using power view to prototype the resulting 'intelligence' and interate thus, until there is business buy in so you can build it to scale in an RDBMS.
It would be helpful to get your ideas on whether this is effective way to interact with business users for designing star schema and if this is what Kimball likely meant.
Thanks!
**addendum, I found Katie & Emil communicate with business users via bus matrix template (also based on Kimball's dimensions and fact). http://www.katieandemil.com/kimball-bus-matrix-in-data-warehouse?tab=article
So, maybe this is best way to interact for logical design 'using spreadsheet'.
