Its been a long time since i have used excel and i cant remember even the simplest things :/

So i want to total up figures with a description beside them from my bank statement which i have in excel format. I just want to be able to see how much cash has been drawn out, card payments made etc by using the description as the search string and the adjacent cells figure be totaled up with any other entries of said description so that i may achieve monthly totals which can be charted.

I should mention that in the search i want to know where i can put in wild cards to make it easier for descriptions with partially dynamic data if possible.

Funny i can remember how to concatenate etc but not this ? *sigh*

@Silmaril... Welcome... :) You can use countif() and sumif() with wildcards. see the examples here. http://chandoo.org/wp/2008/11/12/using-countif-sumif-excel-help/

you can easily make this with excel.

I dont really get it,

Could you make this clearer if i give an example table?

Column A is the description

Colunm B is the ammount i have to pay to that company

I want to find every occurance of "british gas" in col A and total up the figures in Col B to get a total spend for british gas, for example.
