Merge Excel rows like a database does records

Dear Chandoo.

Please help me. I have an issue which began last year. Can Excel merge rows like a database does records? Either Formulas or VBA solution would be acceptable.

An example would be where customer activity is held on Excel. Each row contains a record of the customers' visit and purchase each time they entered the store. Purchases fall into 2 categories. If a customer purchased products from category 1, they are identified as cat 1 customers. If they purchased items from category 2, they are cat 2 customers and if they purchased from both categories, either on the same day or singularly on different visits throughout the year, they are cat 3 customers.

A summary could then identify the true service breakdown being offered to customers such as total customers, percentage purchasing each category and percentage purchasing both categories during time frame, not just in same visit.

I hope this makes sense and that you choose to solve it for me. It really would make my Christmas, or New Year.

With the kindest of regards to you and your family and wishing you a very Merry Christmas,

LeonK

i guess the first thing i'm wondering is where is the data coming from? Manual entering? other sales related Software?

that will be a huge factor as not all software programs are developed to export data nicely to excel...(clic of a button nice)

lets start there.
