Master List creation

Hi All,


I need to create a master excel workbook from different work books.So here it goes:


I have 3 workbooks that have same columns(name and number) but different data(of course).So I need to have a master workbook(which already has data of these 3 books) which is linked to these 3 workbooks and master workbook should get automatically updated if any update or deletions take place in these 3 child books even if the master workbook is closed at that moment.Hope it makes sense and its clear.

Thanks SirJB7,I did have a look at this topic while searching but it had solution with macros whereas I was looking through excel formula or data validation since not so comfortable with Macros.No worries and thanks SirJB7 for you extended help.

Sorry to hear that because I think you won't find any formula solution only to consolidate workbooks when one of them -master or slaves- are closed. And even less if you want to do it in a same worksheet.


With certain constraints you can do this:

- assume that all slave workbooks use only one worksheet (first or same name, you choose, let it be "Data")

- assume that all slave workbooks has that same worksheet structure

- assume that your master workbook has a worksheet for consolidating each workbook (named as workbook slave names)

- assume that your slave workbooks are stored and named "Xn:full path nfile n.xlsx" where Xn is the drive, "full path n" is the full folder and subfolder path, and "file n.xlsx" the filename, being at least one of the three differents

- assume that your master workbook has the related amount or worksheets named "fileN" with N from 1 to slave workbooks number


Then, in cell A1 of "file1" worksheet type this and copy across and down as needed:

='[X1:full path 1file 1.xlsx]Data'!A1


Repeat that for all your other slave workbooks.


When you open your master workbook you'll be prompted to update data from external links, choose yes. And your master workbook will reflect the status of the slaves in seldom worksheets.
