Marathon Qualifier Spreadsheet

I would like to create a spreadsheet for a running group that will calculate how much faster we need to get to qualify for a given marathon, e.g., Boston. Qualifying times depend on sex and age on the date of the race. See http://www.baa.org/races/boston-marathon/participant-information/qualifying/qualifying-standards.aspx.

I would like the spreadsheet to do the following:

1. Produce the qualifying time when a person enters their date of birth and sex.

2. Calculate how much faster pace (miles per minute) a person must run to qualify based on their present best time. For example, the Boston qualifying time for a 40-year-old male is 3:15:00, or a pace of 7:26 per mile. John's best marathon is 4:00, which is a pace of 9:09. Therefore, he needs to improve his mile pace by 1:43 minutes.

How should I approach this? Thanks!

Hi James ,

A few questions :

1. Are you interested only in the Boston marathon , or will you be extending this to others ?

2. How will the spreadsheet get the qualifying data ? Will you enter it yourself , or do you want the spreadsheet to retrieve it from the website ?

3. Do you wish to store any data over a period of time , so that a person can monitor his / her progress over a period of time ?
