Link local excel file to Sharepoint excel file - not a sharepoint list

I am trying to do a variance analysis between pivot tables in a local file and pivot tables in a file posted to sharepoint. I would like to link to sharepoint file and create a linked copy of the pivot tables to the network file so I only ever have to open the one file for refreshing and comparative analysis. I can only find tips and trick how to link to sharepoint lists but these tricks are not working for me. Does anyone have any suggestions?
