Is there any way to insert shapes using the lookup command or based on any criteria

Hi Chandoo and everyone on this forum,

This is the best place to learn excel and i love the way you solve the problems. You are really very awesome!!!!

I am Ilyas from Pune, India.

I want to know whether we can insert grouped symbols based on certain criteria using any formulae.

Suppose I have prepared a list of items to which i have assigned certain shapes. Now on some other sheet when i enter the item name i want the corresponding shape to be displayed against the name. Same as Vlookup but instead of value i want to display the shapes.

Thank You.

Yes it is very possible. Here is a Dashboard I put together covering the topic.

The key is to name your shapes exactly the same as the names in a drop down or whatever method you use to call each shape.

Then use the Indirect formula to reference your drop down cell. Look at the formula called Test2 in the file from the following link.

Dashboard

You will have solved this in no time :)

Take care

Hi shibulal

There is a link conservatively titled 'Dashboard' in post 3 above. At the bottom of that page is an Excel file. Can't miss it the link has the Excel symbol on it.

I am sure you will find it.

Take care

Thanks Somendra for your concern. Actually I am a civil engineer and I am working on a bar bending schedule (pls refer sample). Now my requirement is that if I enter the code in Column J the corresponding shape should be displayed in Column W.

Thanks in advance

Hi Ilyas,

The problem with image look up is that it work with absolute reference. So the problem with come when you have to insert say 100 images you have to create 100 look up formulas. Plus you have to copy paste the image that many times and give them their individual formula.
