inserting rectangle into cell based on project management tutorial

Hi Chandoo,

I was able to successfully recreate your project gantt chart template from this link http://chandoo.org/wp/2009/06/16/gantt-charts-project-management/

However, I am having a little trouble getting the rectangle to fit into the cell, which shows how much of the task has been completed (I turned the shaped horizontally but it still didn't fit). How do I insert a shape into a cell and automatically fit into the cell dimensions?

Thanks

When adjusting the shape of any object (chart, shape, text box, etc), hold down the Alt key to cause the shape to "snap" to cell alignment. This should let you size the rectangle to the same size of the cell.

Hi Luke,

Thanks so much for your prompt response. I tried to do what you said but it seems like the object used in the gantt chart template is a symbol and the alt+drag doesn't work on it. Here is the link to the workbook in dropbox.

Another problem that I ran into while trying to recreate this template (http://chandoo.org/wp/2009/06/16/gantt-charts-project-management/) for my project was that for those activities that do not start at week 1, the highlighted section that shows the duration, seems longer. For example for activity one, the duration for prelive is from 6 to 8 but for some reason, it goes to week 13. It worked perfectly for week 1 to 3 and for postlive activities. I appreciate any help I can get with this

Thanks

Hi, Mekie!

First of all welcome to Chandoo's website Excel forums. Thank you for your joining us and glad to have you here.

As a starting point I'd recommend you to read the three first green sticky topics at this forums main page. There you'll find general guidelines about how this site and community operates (introducing yourself, posting files, netiquette rules, and so on).

Among them you're prompted to perform searches within this site before posting, because maybe your question had been answered yet.

Feel free to play with different keywords so as to be led thru a wide variety of articles and posts, and if you don't find anything that solves your problem or guides you towards a solution, you'll always be welcome back here. Tell us what you've done, consider uploading a sample file as recommended, and somebody surely will read your post and help you.

And about your question...

If you're referring to "Show Status" cell range at P2 in your uploaded worksheet, try adding more equal characters to its definition at cell C3 of worksheet Legend, with 3 more it'd be enough, then enter in next cell Q2 a space so as to crop what it's displayed in previous cell.

Regards!

PS: BTW, and I'm not trying to sell MS software, that's what Project has been created for!

Thanks so much SirJB7!

It worked! Don't know why I didn't think of that :)

Also, I know about MS project but this works better for my project.

I hope to learn a great deal here

Hi, Mekie!

Glad you solved it. Thanks for your feedback and for your kind words too. And welcome back whenever needed or wanted.

Regards!
