Insert a link to open a document

Hi,

is it possible to insert a link in an excel file that will open a document


For example I have a group of students, one worksheet per student


John Doe

Jane Doe

Bruce Wayne

Clark Kent


Within each worksheet I have exam results for each year of their studies

I have scanned a copy of their official results and saved it to a shared network drive

I want to be able to allow their tutors to click on a link that will open up a scanned copy of their results, as students are often asking us to send them copies and rather than sifting through archives I can just click and print.


So essentially can I insert a link in an excel file that will open a pdf or word doc?

Sure thing. Since you have a list of names, you can even do something like this:

=HYPERLINK("C:My DocumentsFiles"&A2&".pdf","Open a pdf")

Where A2 contains the name of file you want.

But this brings me to another question

Say for example I have a word doc in cell A2

And this word doc is a template document, it is a contract

And I have entered the contract variables in the excel file under relevant heading

(name of person, address, contract start, contract end, weekly pay)

and at the end of each row I have a button: Generate Contract


And if I click on this button it will open a word doc for the person on that row of the excel file


Can this be done?


If it can, it would make my job so much easier


In essence it is like doing a mail merge, but for the end user all they would have to do is click a button (handy for colleagues who can only do the bare minimum with computers)
