hyperlink to workbook not working

ok, the answer may be right in front of me, but i'm not seeing it...

i created a hyperlink in a spreadsheet to open a separate existing workbook. i can open the file just fine if i do it manually (File - Open - etc.) but when i insert the hyperlink and click on it, i get this error saying 'Cannot open the specified file.'

what could causing this?!

UPDATE: the only thing i can think of would be the drive that the destination file is located on is mapped on my computer as the Y drive. when i look at the hyperlink path it displays the universal name for the drive.... but i still dont see why this would cause this!?! how do i fix this?!

Check the hyperlink to make sure it's looking in correct place? If either the source workbook, or the workbook contianing link have moved, this can mess things up. The reason is that XL uses relational logic. So, if the workbook you had hyperlinked to was in same folder, XL only stores the info of "look in the same folder as current workbook for this file"

Similarly, if it's 1 folder lower, the logic is "look 1 folder lower for this file". So, if the containing workbook moves somewhere, the path gets messed up.

its in the correct place....

the issue was one of the folders that the file was located in contained a "#" as the folder name. apparently excel/hyperlinks dont like certain special characters.

ironically enough, i was able to create a shortcut to the file located in a folder located above/before the one containing the # and it seems to work just fine! hahahha doesnt quite make sense as they are both pointing to the same exact location... but oh well!!

so there ya go: # symbols (and possibly other special characters will wreak havoc on your hyperlinks

Glad you figured it out, and thanks for letting the rest of us know for future reference.
