How to change hours to minutes

breile01

New Member
In A:2 is 05:05 (5hours & 5 minutes)[A1 is the title of the column]. What formula do I use to change 05:05 to 305 minutes? Which cell do I put the formula in? B2? I have found formulas but when I enter them into B2 I get a formula error. Sorry for such a simple request to the experts but I've spent hours trying to figure this out. I can find formulas but my problem is also which cell do I enter the formula into? Thanks so much!

How about something like:

=60*hour(A2)+Minute(A2)

You can change the format for the cell that contains this formula to "Number" to have it show up the way you want it.

It also shouldn't matter which cell you put the formula into, as long as the formula refers back to the cell that actually has the original data that you are trying to manipulate.

This is what comes back:

Reference: Evaluation:

Jan12ED'!$M$48 =60*HOUR("0 04:02")+MINUTE(L48)

[with the HOUR("0 04:02") underlined

Could it be I haven't included the day because I could have 1 14:02 for 1 day, 14 hours & 2minutes?

Thanks so much for your patience and quick response!

Hi, breile01!

First of all welcome to Chandoo's website Excel forums. Thank you for your joining us and glad to have you here.

As a starting point I'd recommend you to read the green sticky topics at this forums main page. There you'll find general guidelines about how this site and community operates (introducing yourself, posting files, netiquette rules, and so on).

Among them you're prompted to perform searches within this site before posting, because maybe your question had been answered yet.

Feel free to play with different keywords so as to be led thru a wide variety of articles and posts, and if you don't find anything that solves your problem or guides you towards a solution, you'll always be welcome back here. Tell us what you've done, consider uploading a sample file as recommended, and somebody surely will read your post and help you.

And about questions in general...

If you haven't performed yet the search herein, try going to the topmost right zone of this page (Custom Search), type the keywords used in Tags field when creating the topic or other proper words and press Search button. You'd retrieve many links from this website, like the following one(s) -if any posted below-, maybe you find useful information and even the solution. If not please advise so as people who read it could get back to you as soon as possible.

And about this question in particular...

The formula posted by padawan008 for a cell value of 1d14h2m it displays 842, which it's correct if you don't consider the day value (14h*60m+2m=842m). If you want to include those minutes too add "day(a2)*24*60" to the original formula.

Despite of this, the raised prompt seems to be more an issue regarding cell content/formatting. Could you check that the cell is properly formatted ("General" or date/time "dd hh:mm:ss" or something alike) and that it doesn't contain any invalid value (text or so)?

Regards!

Hi ,

First , if you have a value such as the following :

0 12:35:00

in a cell , there are two aspects to it :

1. You could have formatted it as dd hh:mm:ss , in which case , the value in the cell is a numeric value less than 1 , since the number of days is 0 ; entering 0.5 in a cell formatted as above will show 0 12:00:00 , since 0.5 is half a day.

2. The cell might not have been formatted appropriately , in which case , the value in the cell is a text string.

For case 1 , to get the minutes , just multiply the cell value by 1440 , since there are 24 * 60 = 1440 minutes in a day.

For case 2 , try the following :

=LEFT(L48)*1440+60*HOUR(TIMEVALUE(RIGHT(L48,5)))+MINUTE(TIMEVALUE(RIGHT(L48,5)))

where L48 contains your data , such as 0 04:02
