How can I figure out the number of employees needed each month to cover vacations

There are 45 employees, and they work 21 days a month. The childcare have 267 children. There is a 6,1 ratio for children and child care workers. The number of children increases by 5% every month. I need to figure out the number of workers needed to cover the employees' 10 days vacation each year, and month.

So approx 4% of Workdays will be taken by each staff as vacation time.

Multiply that by # of staff and you can get approximation. Assuming vacations are distributed evenly (i.e. there aren't 5 staff taking vacation at the same time).

Using your numbers, between 2~3 staff (full time equivalent).

Edit: However, from staffing perspective, you'll probably want to forecast for 8~12% shrinkage at minimum.

So for covering shrinkage you calculate Staff Req'd/(1-Shrinkage%).
Ex. 45/(1-0.12) = 51.14
