Hebrew sort order incorrect

mdavid

Member
Hi, I'm working on a project about plants, the attached sheet shows the botanical plant name with the Hebrew and Arabic names for the plant.
I'm unable to correctly sort by the Hebrew and I assume the Arabic is also incorrect - I can read Hebrew but not Arabic.
These are both RtL languages, the Hebrew - column E - the 1st letter (for all rows) is sorted correctly, but from the 2nd letter it's unordered - for example cell(E, 13) and cell (E, 14) are incorrect order.
I'm using Excel 2016 could someone suggest a solution to this problem.

Thanks for any help
David

Thanks for this, I already have Hebrew language pack installed.
The solution says:
Add "context" to your ribbon bar (Excel Options -> Customize Ribbon)
but in Excel 2016 don't see "context" to add to ribbon!

... then You gotta find out how to do that.
I do not have that packet neither Excel 2016.
Someone else would give hints soon...

Hi, Any possibility someone could sort the Hebrew and post me the result so I have an indication where the problem is.
Thanks
David

Yes ...
Sheet1 -- has sorted with E-column
Sheet1 (2) -- copy of Sheet1, I swapped E-column 'text' to F-column and after that sort it with F-column.
Questions?

Hi Vletm,
Thanks for this, sheet 1 column E is sorted correctly, any idea why I can't do the same?
On sheet 2 column F the Hebrew is reversed then sorted from right to left (end to start) not what I'm looking for

mdavid
Sheet1 -- Why cannot do same ... maybe because You have Hebrew language pack installed.
Sheet2 -- hmm? -- if that text is originally from right to left
... I reverse texts and then sorted -- then it could be done as normally sorted or not ... hmm?

Hi Vletm,
Yes I have Hebrew language pack installed - why is that a problem? Or was that a typo on your part?

Refer with #Reply - that 'hint' says that it NEEDS!
... and what happened with it? You cannot sort correct!
I don't have .... what happened? I can sort correct!
= very short logic - nothing else!
... or do You have ... better guess?

Hi Vletm, Your logic's ok, but that suggests MS Excel has a serious bug which you'd find pretty quick googling.
The problem's probably somewhere between me and my pc

mdavid
Is it a bug, if it works with me?
Excel has many features which many users never use nor know to use.
Sorting Hebrew is not any challenge for me.
... and between You and Your PC ... are Your fingers - keyboard as well as mouse
You cannot eliminate those ... hmm?
Good luck

Hi Vletm,
Just to let you know you were right, didn't work 'cause of the Hebrew language pack.
Problem was the Hebrew font I was using included symbols representing vowels to indicate pronunciation, its not a Hebrew dialect recognized by Microsoft - so without the language pack it was just sorting by unicode value.
Removed those symbols from the text, all working perfectly now.
Thanks
David

... as normally
... if You try to follow those 'instructions' ... those can work ... or not
For me, those both sorting results look as good as possible
... lucky that I didn't do third version ... do not ask what!
It's good that now You can sort.
