General question: Macro Recorder

Samantha S

I think this is a general question, I apologize if it should have been put in the VBA Macro section.

Any idea why Excel stops responding when trying to record a Macro?

I would like to reformat a spreadsheet (insert fields, add headers, etc) and after the first click, Excel crashes.

I'm currently running Excel 2013 at work, and I've been experiencing this issue starting with 2007...I'm quite stumped.

Thank you,
Samantha

You say you are experiencing this between 2013 and 2007, there are many things in 2013 that cannot be handled by 2007. Doing formatting in 2013 may not carry to earlier excel.
But even if you are trying to carry out a macro in 2013 it should not crash until you try to run it on an earlier version and then it should throw a warning.
You say it happens on the first click, can you explain a bit more, what are you clicking on?

My apologies, I was not very clear in my steps.

I am working out of Excel 2013 on my computer. My reference to 2007 was supposed to indicate that I was having the problem with 2007 and continuing to experience it in the later versions (2010, 2013). I am not trying to use macros between versions but rather I have not been able to successfully record a macro in a spreadsheet that has prepopulated data, since the 2007 version.

I am trying to use the Macro Recorder (I'm not schooled in the VBA Script yet) to record the steps I want to be able to repeat down the road.

When I click record, I name the Macro (something like Center_Reformat) and click OK to begin recording the steps, I click on a cell where I want to start the process, insert cell, shift down, rename the cell - Excel stops responding, the spreadsheet closes and reopens but the macro is not saved.

Hi ,

Excel should not freeze or crash on such simple actions.

There can be several possibilities , ranging from a corrupted Excel installation , to a virus , to hardware problems affecting the RAM in your computer.

Sigh... that's what I was afraid of...

Thank you Narayan. I will reach out to my helpdesk folks and see if they can take a peek.

I would suggest you open Excel in safe mode (by holding down the Ctrl key while you start the application and answering Yes to the prompt) and then see if the behaviour is the same. If it isn't, then one of your startup files (add-ins/personal macro workbook/toolbar file) is the problem.
