Formating - general formating changes all the time to date with time - why?

I have several tabs in a spreadsheet and most of it is formatted to GENERAL, there is no rhyme or reason to why it changes to ####### and then I have to go back and change formatting from the date back to general. Does anyone know why?

If you input a number that looks like it'll be a date (such as 1/3) XL will assume you are inputting a date. Also, the ### could just be XL saying that the column is too narrow to display all the data.

the columns are the correct size and the numbers are not in a date look like. The cell actually changes from GENERAL to date - there are other cells that are dates that remain the same and the Percent cells change too. It is Excel 2010 and it is just crazy

Hi, rtaylor2336!

First of all welcome to Chandoo's website Excel forums. Thank you for your joining us and glad to have you here.

As a starting point I'd recommend you to read the green sticky topics at this forums main page. There you'll find general guidelines about how this site and community operates (introducing yourself, posting files, netiquette rules, and so on).

Among them you're prompted to perform searches within this site before posting, because maybe your question had been answered yet.

Feel free to play with different keywords so as to be led thru a wide variety of articles and posts, and if you don't find anything that solves your problem or guides you towards a solution, you'll always be welcome back here. Tell us what you've done, consider uploading a sample file as recommended, and somebody surely will read your post and help you.

And about your question...

Besides what Luke M posted, it might be too a problem with columns too narrow to display cells data. Try entering FALSE in a cell and set its column width to 5 or less with Arial 8 as an example.

Regards!

EDIT:

PS: Excel 2010 isn't crazy, just users who try do deal with it.

PS2: Joke.

PS3: About Excel. :p
