Excel Power Pivot - System/ Apps/ Software Requirements

In reading about Excel's new Power Pivot feature I have seen several references to SQL Server. Are there minimum requirements (be they SQL Server or other applications) to be met before I can take advantage of PowerPivot?

I'd like to ask my boss for an upgrade to my version of Excel from v2007 but I don't want any surprises like "Oh by the way . . . didn't anyone tell you that in odrer to use this you also need to buy that?".

Thanks for the links Narayan. The first link seems pretty straightforward and I think my pc meets those requirements (64-bit w/ 16gig ram).

But later I find this:

After you create the workbook, you can publish it to a SharePoint Server 2010 farm that has Excel Services and a deployment of SQL Server PowerPivot for SharePoint. PowerPivot workbooks can be opened in Excel 2007.

I'm pretty good with Excel, but the SharePoint, Excel Services and SQL Server stuff is beyond me. (What the heck is a SharePoint farm? Nevermind. Don't answer that.) In fact, these things may be beyond my needs. It sounds like some of the PowerPivot features are written for collaborative use. Since I don't work in a group I would only share my results for consumption, not for editing or revising.

Or do I still need to be concerned that I may not be "hooked-up" correctly?

Hi ,

There are two ways you can install PowerPivot - one on a standalone PC , if it is to be used by just one person , and another on a Sharepoint farm , where it can be used by several users , in conjunction with SQL Server.

If you are going to use Powerpivot only on your PC , only for your own use , don't bother about the Sharepoint parts.

See if this link helps :
