Dependent data validation drop down list

I have a cell with a data validation list formula:

=INDIRECT($D2)

The value in D2 is the name of a named range. I get the error message "The Source currently evaluates to an error."

What am I doing wrong?

Please see attached... I use this method for a little eBay business that my daughter has. Column E is the Indirect formula that you were asking about.
In the Variables tab there is a category list, then a table and named range for every category on that list. I then have separate spread sheet (with some VBA) that reads in these files to a summary and tabular data tabs...
