Database or Excel Workbook?

Hi,

I have a general question regarding performance when opening or saving my workbook as it is very slow.

I am using Excel2007, my PC has 2GB ram, workbook file size is 35mb, there are no formulaes, the data is on one worksheet and occupies from A1:DY47486 (which is 129 columns x 47486 rows), each column is a named range, I have set my calculation option to manual (even though there are no volatile formulaes).

The workbook will be used as a reference only. So my question is... has my data exceeded the useful limit of excel? Will increasing my ram help? Other suggestions?

Look forward to your experienced opinions.

cheers

You haven't exceeded the limits of Excel, but your RAM is severely limiting, and 47K+x129 columns rows is a lot to process. Probably best to drop it into Access, you can still pivot an Access database.

Hi xld,

thanks, I thought that might be the case. Time for a PC upgrade and/or placing my data in a db. Thanks for your input.

cheers
