Data Label or Group Relationship Flow - Parent Child Relationship

All,

Pretty new to Excel (2010). Yet, really enjoyed the brief training I've had. Now everything is - must be able to be done in excel.

I've data - "groups names", extracted from LDAP in an excel format. I'm thnking about a flow chart to show the top level and how by placing X in a certain group, you are automatically added to other groups, yet there must be something more dynamic and easier to update in the future.

Any ideas?

In the future, I'd like to add the "data" to a new user starter form, so that people can only choose the top level to begin with and then are shown the groups that they will automatically be added to it.

Welcome!

What all are you wanting displayed vs. what is inputted?

If the user is providing inputs where latter choices are limited/expanded based on previous choices, perhaps you can use dynamic validation.

If you're looking for user to give a single input and a list is displayed showing everything that's connected, you would need to construct a table with 1 column per main group, and then use multiple rows to list everything they will be added to. You could then do some type of dynamic lookup to bring over the correct list.

Can you expand on what you would like to see?

Thanks,

If I'm put into a group, because I'm already in that group, which other groups am I in as well?

If I start by selection my location i.e. London. Then I'd be shown a list of possible departments specific to that location.

i.e Tax,HR,Marketing.

Then if I select Marketing. I'd like to see which other groups I'd already belong to, because I'm in the Marketing Group.

The group structure may not be as clean cut as that, in the 'the real' world, but that is where I'm going.

I hope that helps.

Sounds like you could use the contextures article. Debra's design lets you pick fruits or veggies, and then pick the appropriate item from whichever group. You should be able to adapt the line of thinking, it's just going to take some work to setup (as you need to let Excel know all the groupings).
