Hi Folks,

I came across a ranking issue. Plz help me resolve:

The problem is as below:

Group A:

Team Name Points NRR

TeamA 6 2.3

TeamB 3 -0.3

TeamC 3 1.2

TeamD 0 0.8

Please help me rank the team using a formula

Thanks,

Sagar

Hi Friends,

Thanks for the posts.

I must explain that the rank here is the conditional one.

When the points are matching (Team B & Team C are on Points 3), the ranking is to be decided by NRR.

Hence, simply using Rank function wont help.

Please suggest the solution

Hi Sagar,

Perhaps it is obvious to anyone following cricket regularly... since I don't, what is NRR?

That's right Narayan.

So, the first criteria of Ranking is Points & if the points are the same, the ranking is to be decided by higher NRR.

Thanks

Hi Sagar ,

You can use the RANK function ; just use a helper column , where you enter a formula such as POINTS + NRR*0.01 , so that the NRR values do not overshadow the points. Use the RANK function on this helper column.

Hi Sagar ,

Why do you say so ? A negative NRR will push that team down the order , but since the weightage given to the NRR is 0.01 , it will ensure that a team with higher points remains higher up in the ranking ; if you think the NRR can vary so widely , change the 0.01 to 0.001 or whatever. After all , the NRR is to be used only to decide between two teams which have the same number of points ; if the difference between two teams on points can be at least 1 , then unless the difference in two NRRs is more than 100 , 0.01 * NRR cannot overcome the 1 point difference.

Please try any given answer before you decide it is wrong.
