COUNTIF is not working

Hello guys, I sincerely hope you can help me out.

I am currently doing an exam, and I need to use the "COUNTIF" function to count how many times certain US states appear in a long list of data. I am writing =COUNTIF(A1:A1466,"Alabama"), and have also tried with a semi-colon instead of colon.... and it will not work, even though I can see that Alabama figures in the given column.

Any ideas as to why it will not provide me with a number?

P.S. = The weird thing is, that when I use the excel formula function, and put in the area and word I am looking for, it tells me that it is found 61 times... but then when I press "ok" as in "give me the number in my chosen excel cell" the formula just remains there... it does not give me the number

Hi @Mie Olsen Good day and welcome to the forum...
May be there are some spaces or any other hidden character like char(160)

Without seeing your file it is hard to provide targeted solution, Can you post a sample file?

Regards,

Yes of course... thank you so much for answering.

Here is my excel project file.. under the second sheet called "Fane" (its in Danish) you can see that I wrote the formula under "I"... "TÆL.HVIS" is the Danish equivalent of "countif"... But when I press ok/enter it does not give med the number...

Let me know if you have suggestions, that would be lovely.

Hi,

Your cells are formatted as text :)

Format cell.png

Just change it to general or number (as required) and then re-enter.
