Count Number of Periods in a Cell

In the attached file, I am just trying to count the number of periods in each cell. The COUNTIF ( ) doesn't work since that returns the number of cells that have a certain criteria, but I'm looking for a formula to count the number of periods in each cell.

Column D has the correct answer.

I feel like I am overlooking something very simple.

Maybe: put this on C3 and copied down

=COUNTA($B$3:B3)-1

Try something like this...copied down:

=LEN(B3)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(B3,".",""))

Is that something you can work with?
