Conditional Formatting with number ranges

I have used the following conditional formula

=Class!$H$2=P$1

There are two issues:
  1. One, in the sheet named MATRIX I inputted a series of values, for example C1 is 6-8 (6 to 8). However it keeps recognizing it as a date instead of values in a range. What do I need to change?
  2. Secondly, I added the above conditional formula to the MATRIX sheet but it will not recognize the values 6-8. What do I add to formula so when I input the #6 in the sheet named CLASS it will shade C1 (6-8) in the sheet named MATRIX.
I have attached the excel worksheet.

Hi ,

I think the use of CF to colour the database is unusual.

When data is entered , it is more usual to give feedback to the user about the information available in the database.

See the attached file.
