Conditional Formatting toggle?

Hello and I hope you all have had a great Holiday season!

I've made a spreadsheet for learning the notes on the guitar fret board.

What I wish to do is to select one of the 7 natural Notes: A B C D E F G which is listed alongside the data.

When one chooses one of those notes on the side list, all of the corresponding notes on the data are highlighted in order to see and learn the patterns on the guitar neck.

I've played with adding buttons and etc but when I select the cells and click "OK" I get "Invalid Reference"

Is there a way to do this? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Since I know nothing about music, it's a long shot.
