Conditional formatting of area chart

Hi All,

I have an area chart with dates along the bottom axis and stock price along the vertical axis. I am trying to show 3 distinct "phases" within the area chart by changing the color. Is there a way to have the color of the area change based on the date? I have tried everything I can think of to no avail.

I'm willing to use/learn VBA if thats what is needed. Also I have excel 2010 in case there are any new features in it that will help me.

Any help would be most appreciated.

There's several tricks you can do, which tankfully don't involve VBA. Check out Jon Peltier's (a charting wizard!) ideas here:

I think the latter may be exactly what you're looking for.
