Conditional formatting based on symbols

In the attached file in cell E5, I have data validation with inserted symbols to choose from. I am trying to apply conditional formatting based on which symbol is current showing. The conditional formatting doesn't appear to recognize symbols that I have inserted (from Insert > Symbols > Symbol). I am trying to apply red to the downward triangle.

Is there a way to make this happen?

That worked. Thank you.

I tried this again on a different spreadsheet. On that one I had an up triangle and a down one. The conditional formatting that should have been applied to the down triangle was applied to the up triangles as well. I added a third symbol to test this and it appears as though Excel recognizes all inserted symbols as the same thing. Seems like Excel can't differentiate between two symbols.

See the file attached to this post.

Edit: The reason it applied to all cells was nothing more than the fact I had a $ in front of the column letter. All is good now.

You need to remove the $ sign, otherwise it just looks at C5, so it should be
=C5="▼"
