Checking a SQL Server is available/Online using VB

Hello Again, Sparky here.
before running a stored Procedure that will connect and extract data from a central SQL Server Database, i need to establish if the Server is online and available to the user before the job runs. I can check the user has a Network connection (Internet). Users may have a network connection but the SQL server may not be available.

AFAIK - There isn't way to check other than actually making/attempting connection.

I'd go with creating error trap and have message pop up on connection error.

Other potential methods is to use reference to MSWINSCK.OCX in VBA and check TCP/IP connection to server IP & Port.
