Charting - small and large number on one line chart

Hello all,

I have a charting problem and hope you can come up with a solution. Like always, the solution should delivery the message clearly, easy to read, understand as well as look amazing. :)

Below (and attached) you will find the data with small and large numbers ranging from 1.03 to 1.84, the average being 1.30. The chart is created monthly, printed and published on a Lean Manufacturing Visual Board in the production cafeteria. Management meets and discuss the results each week.
Note; the graph is presented in hard copy form, and the team like to view the graph using lines, not columns.. However, 2014 YTD data is presented as a column, everything else is presented as lines.

Month 2012 2013 2014 2014 YTD Target
Jan 1.08 1.31 1.25 1.25 1.29
Feb 1.27 1.32 1.34 1.30 1.29
Mar 1.60 1.30 1.38 1.32 1.29
Apr 1.36 1.18 1.34 1.33 1.29
May 1.38 1.24 1.48 1.36 1.29
Jun 1.31 1.37 1.33 1.35 1.29
Jul 1.40 1.06 1.25 1.34 1.29
Aug 1.27 1.29 1.22 1.32 1.29
Sep 1.25 1.27 1.03 1.29 1.29
Oct 1.48 1.28 1.40 1.30 1.29
Nov 1.40 1.34 1.29
Dec
1.84 1.56 1.29
If possible, I would like to show the chart in three scale ranges.
  • 1.00 to 1.20 with increments of 0.20
  • 1.20 to 1.40 with increments of 0.05 (this range represents the target range)
  • 1.40 to 2.00 with increments of 0.20
I read the article published on this subject however, I feel this one is a little more complicated...as you can imagine, achieving this with so many data point in not easy. I tried creating three different graphs and grouping them. This looks great if I use columns, but as I must use lines it doesn't look or flow well.

I also tried to replicate this article...... https://sites.google.com/site/e90e50fx/home/broken-line-panel-charts

Thank you in advance for your kind help.
