Cell Background

I am going to put up my Excel spreadsheet on Excel Online. However, one limitation of Excel Online is that it will not accept any objects. I have numerous hyperlinked navigation buttons (icons) that I must eliminate. The hyperlinks allow the user to navigate quickly to other areas of the file. Since Excel Online will accept hyperlinks, I can insert a hyperlink in a cell to replace a button.

My question is this: can I somehow insert a picture background in an individual cell? If that were possible it would preserve the icon look and feel. Is there a creative workaround solution for this problem?

That's an interesting idea. I didn't know you could do that. However, if you click on the cell comment image, you can't hyperlink that image. I guess the best I could do is insert a comment image in a cell, and in the next cell below, insert a hyperlink.
