Can I hide/show colored cells in excel?

I'm trying to create a project schedule with different tactics' timelines. Can I create colored buttons in excel that I can click on the button and the same colored cells show up on the calendar?

I'm definitely not a excel Ninja but I am willing to learn and I appreciate everyone's help. Thank you!

Hi Susie ,

What you have described can certainly be done in Excel ; however , it will involve some amount of VBA ; is this OK with you ?

If so , please give more details , or better still , upload your workbook ; check this link for how to do this : http://chandoo.org/forums/topic/posting-a-sample-workbook

Hi Narayan,

Thank you so much for your reply.

Please see below link for my worksheet.

I feel it is hard to read so I would like to create colored buttons to make it more easy to read.

Thank you very much!

Also, I think it's okay if it involves some amount of VBA as long as I can learn and master it. Thank you so much once again.

Hi Susie ,

I have downloaded your file , and see there are 4 colors , excluding BLACK i.e. YELLOW , PINK , BLUE and AMBER.

Except for the rows 4 and 6 , I think in all other rows , there is no mixup of two or more colors i.e. in all other rows , only one color occurs in a row.

Now , if you click on a YELLOW button , and you want only the yellow colored cells to be displayed , what should happen to the other colored cells ? Should all those rows be hidden ?

Can you explain a little more ?

Narayan

Hi Narayan,

Thanks again for your reply. The four colors in Rows 4 and 6 are the labels for each tactic. I was hoping to create buttons for the four colors in Rows 4 and 6. And if I click on the yellow cell in row 4, all the yellow cells would show up in the calendar. And if I click all of four colors in Row4 and 6, then all of the colored cells would show up at the same time in the calendar and that's why I make it only one color in a row. Let me know if it needs more detail. Thank you very much for your time.

Hi Susie ,

Can you clarify one point ?

You say that the 4 colors in rows 4 and 6 are the place-holders for the buttons. Understood.

You say "if I click on the yellow cell in row 4, all the yellow cells would show up in the calendar." ; what should happen to the other colors ?

Narayan

And yes, I think if only yellow colored cells to be displayed, other colored cells could be hidden. Would that be easier?

Hi Susie ,

No problem ; only please understand , hiding entire rows would be easier and probably better than hiding only the colored cells. Is this OK ?

Narayan

Hi Susie ,

Can you download this file and see if it is what you wanted ?

Hi Narayan,

Thank you very much for your time. But I'm so sorry I should have say that if should be hiding only colored cells that we didn't select. Since now if I selected only one color, the same colored cells showed but the calendar's date is gone and I won't be able to know which date I should pursue the tactics. Or could we keep showing the whole calendar all the time? I know the comment is hide/unhide cells. Do you think we could change the color of cells and fonts into white when we didn't select the color. In this way, it should keep showing the calendar all the time. Let me know if this logic could work. or which approach is easier.

I really appreciate your time and your help. Also, is this hard to learn? I'm would like to learn it so that I can create/modify it in the future. As you mentioned, it involves VBA and I was trying to see the comment/code on the spreadsheet you did but I couldn't find it. Do you mind teach me how to do that? Thank you so much!

Susie

Hi Susie ,

I understand now. Let me see how this change can be implemented ; it is possible. I'll get back to you.
