AutoSum Issue

New Member
I am attempting to create an autosum formula in cells where data was previously entered by hand. I never even get to the formula, because when I click on AutoSum in the cell I've chosen, I get an error message that says "Microsoft Excel has stopped working." I've cleared the cell contents without success. Excel doesn't seem to have a fix for this. Any ideas on how I can get the cells to start taking formulas again?

I am using Excel 2010. I notice this happening most often in templates I've created that are used on an ongoing basis.

Hi, TxBetts!

First of all welcome to Chandoo's website Excel forums. Thank you for your joining us and glad to have you here.

As a starting point I'd recommend you to read the three first green sticky topics at this forums main page. There you'll find general guidelines about how this site and community operates (introducing yourself, posting files, netiquette rules, and so on).

And about your question...

Would you please upload a sample file? Guidelines available at second green sticky post:

Sounds like you may have some corruption in your file. in which case, make sure you have a saved copy, and perhaps try to start migrating all the data into a fresh workbook.

As for the AutoSum, note that the button is simply a shortcut to writing a formula. You could try creating the formula manually by typing something like:

=SUM(A2:A100)
