When I was having the problem, in the Home tab I had all my numbers right aligned. I de-selected the right alignment so that there was no alignment in the cell and it gave me the exact effect I was looking for. Weird.

I had colored each column differently. The left column I had formatted as blue, the middle as grey, and the right as green.
